Hesky Park, Meredith, NH-webWhen Bob, Ken, and Chuck, the owners of Hermit Woods Winery in Meredith discovered that the Dolgo crabapple, their favorite crabapple and the one used in one of their most popular wines, was growing in Meredith’s Hesky Park, they knew they had to do something special. So they dedicated their 2017 Heirloom Crabapple wine, released in 2018 and crafted in part from the fruit harvested from the two trees in Hesky Park, to Meredith’s 250th Anniversary.

Heirloom CrabappleAfter getting permission from the Meredith Parks Department to pick the apples, and ensuring that no chemicals were used in their care, Bob and Ken spent the afternoon of August 28th, 2017 picking crabapples, a lot of apples, over three hundred and fifty pounds of little tiny crabapples.

Heirloom Crabapple2Hermit Woods Winery has been making Heirloom Crabapple wine from Dolgo crabapples since the winery first opened in 2011. According to the owners, it has always been one of their most popular wines. One of the challenges Hermit Woods faces in making the Heirloom Crabapple wine is finding enough Dolgo crabapples. As this fruit is mostly used today as a decorative tree, not many orchards still produce them for use in food or cider. Bob explains “We have been fortunate to source these very special apples from Alyson’s Orchard in Walpole NH, and Scott Farm in Dummerston VT., but never as many as we would like. So you can imagine our delight when we discovered them growing right here in Meredith!”
