Visit the Grave Site of Joseph Plummer, The Hermit of Meredith Hill

Join Hermit Woods Winery & Eatery Founder Bob Manley on September 28th at 9:30 a.m. for a short hike to Joseph Plummer’s grave site in the Hermit Town Forest. You will have the opportunity to learn the fascinating history of the Hermit of Meredith Hill and how it relates to the founding of Hermit Woods Winery & Eatery.

A minimum donation of $1.00 is required to secure a place on the hike. However, you can donate any additional amount you choose to the Meredith Historical Society or the Meredith Conservation Commission for their support of the History of the Hermit and the Town Forest. Each ticket is sold one at a time. Your donations are much appreciated.

WE WILL ONLY ACCEPT TEN PEOPLE ON THIS HIKE.

We will meet on Hermit Woods Road at the border of Sanbornton and Meredith (there is a Town Border Sign at this location). Hermit Woods Road runs between Rt 132 to the West and Carleton Road to the East. See the map below for the location of the parking area.

There is a small parking lot on the south side of the road, and if there is no room, you can park along the roadside.

Everyone who joins us on the hike will be offered a two-for-one tour and tasting at Hermit Woods. You can take the tour following the hike at noon or 1:30 or choose another Saturday to attend the tour. Reservations are required.

The hike is approximately a one-mile round trip. You need to be in good physical shape to complete the hike. Even though the whole hike is short, the stream crossing, hilly terrain, and fallen trees to climb over can be challenging. If you do the stream crossing carefully, you can be sure to stay dry. However, the stream is shallow; good boots should protect your feet either way. There is no trail (and we want to keep it that way), so we will be roaming around in uncharted and unmaintained forest. If you have further questions about the difficulty of the hike, please get in touch with me at bob@hermitwoods.com. • Sturdy waterproof hiking boots
• Hiking pole or poles
• Appropriate clothes depending on the weather.

We are capping the hike at ten guests to minimize our impact on the forest. 100% of donations will be given to the Meredith Historical Society for the great work they have done keeping the history of the Hermit alive, or the Meredith Conservation Commission for making this forest possible and the many other tracks of land kept in conservation in the town of Meredith.

In the event of rain, the hike will occur on Sunday the 29th. If we need to move the hike to Sunday, you will be notified the night before.
